Artist Formally Shows His Prints

7 Oct 2003
Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer are in the midst of launching their new take on Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.

All three were at Dublin's City Hall last week for a viewing of the paintings Bono has completed - with help from his daughters Jordan and Eve. Executed on enormous white canvases in bold strokes of black, Bono's works were inspired by Gavin Friday and the Friday-Seezer Ensemble's adaptation of Prokofiev's children's tale.

The CD and accompanying book will raise money for the Irish Hospice Foundation, who looked after Bono's father as he died of cancer in the summer of 2001.

"I love art too much to call these anything other than marks on paper," said Bono, before adding that he found the challenge of illustrating the story a cathartic experience. 'Beneath the jollity there is a serious side to this work which is to do with my old man who gave me my voice and my interest in paint...but not the confidence to do anything with them, as you can see.'

After a couple of days on show in London, the Irish Hospice Foundation is taking the paintings to the U.S. for display at Christie's auction house in Los Angeles from October 13th-15th (from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Then the exhibition will move to Christie's in New York on November 21st (also from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), where the paintings will be auctioned off that evening, all funds going to the Irish Hospice Foundation.
