'Great To Be Alive'

'We're all feeling very much alive and grateful for it', Bono announced before 'Mysterious Ways'. 'I said to Quincy Jones one night, that line: Great to be alive. He looked at me and goes: Great to be alive? Great to be alive? It's crucial, man.'

And it was crucial to be at this show. Tonight 'When Love Comes To Town' took the place of 'Party Girl'  and there were snatches of lots of songs giving thanks for friends present and absent: Donna Summer's 'State of Independence'; 'We Are The World' by USA For Africa; 'Sympathy for the Devil' and 'Paint It Black' by the Rolling Stones, 'Two Tribes' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood; 'Walk on the Wild Side' by Lou Reed, and 'America' by Simon and Garfunkel. 

Hozier's 'Take Me To Church' joined the encore before a snippet of 'Gloria'  and The Beatles' 'Blackbird' closed the night.

Before 'All I Want Is You', inspired by Brian Eno's turntable: 'We're clearly not gambling men, but we will bet on the union of art and science…out in the world. We need more creative experimental thinking about art and technology. We have some problems to solve!'
