Adam, Edge and U2 are among the nominations in the 2002 Gibson Guitar Awards.

Adam, who won the award as Best Bassist last year, is nominated alongside Colin Greenwood (Radiohead), Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band), Shavo (System of the Down) and Dana Williams (Diamond Rio).

Edge is nominated for Best Rock Guitarist alongside fellow nominees Ryan Adams, Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead), Mark Knopfler, Lenny Kravitz, Dave Navarro, Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Richie Sambora and Steve Vai.

U2 are also nominated in the awards, for Best Guitar Band - the competition includes Blink 182, Five For Fighting, Green Day, Lifehouse, Linkin Park, Nickelback, Train, Travis and Weezer.

The annual Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards are traditionally presented on the day before the Grammy Awards to recognize guitar players (and players of related fretted instruments) for their artistic accomplishments and to honor musicians who reflect the spirit of Orville H. Gibson (1856-1918) and his belief in quality, innovation and tradition. Winners are voted by members of the music media.

This year rock guitar pioneer Scotty Moore and legendary banjo great Earl Scruggs are expected to be on hand to receive the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award.
