Amnesty Utilising Web To Stop Torture

2 Mar 2001
Getting away with torture just got a little harder. Amnesty International, an organisation long supported by U2, has launched a new FAST network to stop torture.

FAST (Fast Action Stops Torture) will instantly send out an alarm to thousands of activists around the globe who will send electronic letters of protest. Within hours the threat of torture is exposed, which makes it nearly impossible to carry out.

Torturers thrive when they can act in secrecy. When it seems that no one is watching, torture is used to intimidate, coerce and silence men, women and children around the world.

Since travelling with Amnesty on the Conspiracy of Hope Tour in the mid-1980's U2 have highlighted the work of Amnesty - encouraging fans to write letters of protest to countries and regimes where torture is being carried out.

When you sign up with FAST, you transform your computer, cell phone, handheld or pager into an instant action tool - a tool with the power to save thousands of people from the horrors of torture.

You also become a part of a worldwide community of activists determined to prove that human rights violations can -- and will -- be stopped.

As soon as Amnesty International hears about an imminent threat of torture, FAST instantly sends out an alarm to its network of activists around the globe. Cell phones ring, pagers buzz and computers chime, instructing activists by the thousands to sign electronic letters of protest.

As Amnesty International put it, 'Torturers, Welcome to the Information Age.'
