Bono Performs Children of the Revolution

25 May 2001
Director Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, boasts one of the hottest soundtracks of the year.

Luhrmann invited Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer to record a version of T Rex's Children of the Revolution.

Friday, Seezer and Bono previously collaborated on Jim Sheridan's film 'In the Name of the Father' in 1993. The folks at Gavinfriday.com asked Gavin how roles in the studio were divided for their latest collaboration.

'We are one but not the same,' he replied, ' Bono took the role of Bolan and I took on the role of Flo & Eddie (backing singers on the original) at the request of the director. 'The recordings were very free form, just the three of us dossin'. It was chaos 'n' fun, mad jams, very uncontrived with our tongues firmly in our cheeks.'

Two versions of the track were mixed by 'Biffco' at Windmill Lane. The mix used in the film is different from the one on the soundtrack: "It's a demented camp/handbag/heavy metal/pop kind of thing."

Will it be released? "Maybe?"

The Moulin Rouge soundtrack, released on Interscope Records, also features Fatboy Slim on 'Because We Can', an updated take on the 'Can-Can', while Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink team up to form an R&B/pop supergroup on a cover of 'Lady Marmalade'.

The film's stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor also feature occassionally, including, it is reported, Ewan McGregor on a version of The Police's 'Roxanne', and in duet with Placido Domingo on a cover of Elton John's 'Your Song'.
