Four Grammy Awards Including Record of The Year

27 Feb 2002
Adam, Larry, Edge and Bono pick up four more Grammy Awards for All That You Can't Leave Behind at the 2002 Grammy Awards.

Walk On gets the big one - Record of the Year - while All That You Can't Leave Behind is named Best Rock Album, and Stuck in a Moment That You Can't Get Out Of is named 'Best Song by a Pop Duo or Group' and Elevation wins Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.

On the night Alicia Keys also wins big, taking five including 'Best Song' for Fallin', as well as 'best new artist' and three R&B awards. The big surprises is the Best Album award going to the film soundtrack for O Brother Where Art Thou ?

U2 win Record Of The Year for Walk On, which they perform to open the ceremony, backed by gospel star Kirk Franklin. The band, which won the same award last year with "Beautiful Day," is the first act to win back-to-back Record Of The Year trophies since Roberta Flack scored in the early '70s.

In accepting the award, Bono explains that inspiration is vital to the making of a great recording. "It's a gift more than a craft," he says, before paraphrasing Quincy Jones' famous line about the need to leave a little space in the recording studio "for God to walk through the room."

The awards mean that All That You Can't Leave Behind has now won a total of seven Grammy's, with four different tracks - Beautiful Day won three awards last year.

Describing the band as "pushing a rock up a hill" in 2000, Bono says U2 are a band "desperate to be relevant rather than successful."

Commenting on the success of the recent Elevation tour, he adds, "When this country takes you to its heart, it's an extraordinary feeling ... These have been testy times for America, so we know you didn't take just anyone to your heart."
