'Remember Us?'

9 Sep 2014244
A letter from Bono, on the arrival 'of our new baby' - Songs of Innocence.

'Hello, bonjour, ciao, hola, hallo, zdravo, dobar dan, Dia duit, hæ, hej, hei, cześć, olá, ćao, namaste, sawatdee, jambo, pozdravi, Γεια σου, привіт, שלום, مرحبا, こんにちは, , سلام, 你好, Привет….

Remember us? Pleased to announce myself, Edge, Adam and Larry have finally given birth to our new baby… Songs of Innocence. It’s been a while. We wanted to get it right for you/us. We just finished it last week and thanks to Apple and iTunes it’s with you today. That’s already amazing to me as it normally takes a few months to turn this stuff around.

Part of the DNA of this band has always been the desire to get our music to as many people as possible. In the next 24 hours, over a half a billion people are going to have Songs of Innocence… should they choose to check it out. That is so exciting. People who haven’t heard our music, or weren’t remotely interested, might play us for the first time because we’re in their library. Country fans, hip hop afficionados from east LA, electro poppers from Seoul, Bhangra fans from New Delhi, Highlifers in Accra… might JUST be tempted to check us out, even for a moment. What a mind blowing, head scratching, 21st century situation. Over 500 million people… that’s a billion ears. And for the people out there who have no interest in checking us out, look at it this way… the blood, sweat and tears of some Irish guys are in your junk mail.

You’ll have noticed the album is free to U2.com’ers from the band. It’s also free to everyone on iTunes thanks to Apple. To celebrate the ten year anniversary of our iPod commercial, they bought it as a gift to give to all their music customers. Free, but paid for. Because if no-one's paying anything for it, we’re not sure “free” music is really that free. It usually comes at a cost to the art form and the artist… which has big implications, not for us in U2, but for future musicians and their music... all the songs that have yet to be written by the talents of the future… who need to make a living to write them.

We’re collaborating with Apple on some cool stuff over the next couple of years, innovations that will transform the way music is listened to and viewed. We’ll keep you posted. If you like Songs of Innocence,  stay with us for Songs of Experience. It should be ready soon enough… although I know I’ve said that before…

I hope after listening to our new long player a few times, you’ll understand why it took so long. We really went there… it’s a very, very personal album. Apologies if that gets excruciating… actually, I take that back. No apologies if it gets excruciating. What’s the point in being in U2 if you can’t go there?
There is no end to LOVE.'

Mind blown
Okay, today has been a bit overwhelming.....one album launched, a second about to land. Only had one listen so far..... Here's my standouts (bear in mind, only one listen) The Miracle of Joey Ramone Iris (Hold Me Close) Volcano Raised By Wolves This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now Some powerful stuff in there and already produced goosebumps. You're the only band that does that to me. Can't wait to see you in Melbourne, Australia, really, really soon. There is no end to love when it comes to listening to your songs.

Songs of Innocence Challenge
How amazing to find out that there's a new U2 LP, that it's already in my music library and it's free!! Not to mention it fills the soul with such richness in sound and lyrics. To say thanks to U2 for such an incredible gift I've donated $11 to the (RED) campaign, which is a steal at $1/song! So to the U2 community - Consider this your challenge to match by taking on what I'm calling the Songs of Innocence Challenge!!

Welcome back, boys!
Dear U2, First listen (finally) and absolutely loving the new album. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You have been the soundtrack to my life for 25 years and with "Songs of Innocence" you've somehow managed to capture the essence of early U2 with the experience and perspective of the men you are today. As others have mentioned, can't wait to enjoy and savour this album over repeated listens (and especially road trips). Bono, how could we ever forget U2? You guys are the best and we are so happy to have you back. Much love and respect from Toronto, Canada.

Thank you for this incredible gift
Boys, you don't know what great timing you have with this gift. Been having a rough time of it lately. These songs are cutting me deep. Chills listening to Song for Someone, California, The Troubles. Bless you.

Still Can't Believe It - This Album is A
U2 have found a way to take everything modern in music and infuse it with their magic. This album is so U2 and so not at parts, and it's that which makes this album consistently good. This album already sounds both of this century and even transcends it. All I want to do is discover the new U2 and listen to this over and over. There's something to be said for that. The music on here is interesting and different and catchy and soulful and biting, and Bono's lyrics are his best in a long time. So very happy today. I'm so happy these songs exist because they're all so amazing.

Unrealistic Expectations
I was excited about the surprise album and even more so about the bold delivery method. But several listens inm and I guess I am let down by the expectations I have had have met from the 80s-05 albums. I will continue to listen and see if any songs resonate. Bit as of now, not as great, brilliant, or relevant as everyone's comments. Nothing I could see being played on the radio or a song I would turn up and listen to over and over again. Nothing I would look forward to see live or would add to my favorites/playlists. Sorry for going against the grain with everyone as opinions differ. I continue to look for that magic of hearing Streets, The Fly, Beautiful Day, Vertigo, and even Discoteque for the first time. Just haven't felt it on the last two albums and not sure its in the future cards.

U2 13.0
I'm hearing a lot of reminiscence and longing for the U2 of yesterday in these in these comments and they remind me of me. Not me today, listening to Songs of Innocence for the first time, I'm talking about me, back in 1991 listening to Achtung Baby for the first time and thinking to myself, "what the hell is this?" You see, I'm guessing that most of the people reminiscing here about the U2 of yesterday are probably NOT reflecting on U2, the band that gave us Boy when they were boys, War when they were twenty-somethings, and Joshua Tree when they came of age, all of which are very different albums. I'm guessing that what those folks are thinking of is the How-to-Dismantle-an-Atomic-Bomb-U2 who gave us a very different album with No Line on the Horizon but, by their estimation, should be back doing the same old thing they did in 2004 now that they've had 10 years or so to recreate it. Well, I got news for all those U2 fans who were born in 2004: every U2 is a different U2 (they're the perfect Herecletian band). That's one of, if not THE, thing that makes U2 great: they're always reinventing themselves. They're artists and reinventing themselves is what artists do. If you're not reinventing yourself, you're just a pop star. Do I love Songs of Innocence? I don't know yet. Do I continue to respect the Irish fab 4 for their creative genius? You bet I do!

Digital only?
Will this album be in digital format only. I don't like MP3 format. Will we be able to purchase it in CD format? LP? The picture looks like vinyl.

Happiness!!!!
Yay & welcome back! Love love love love… We've missed you all! I've had it on repeat & am thrilled to finally have it! Can't wait to hear them live for the tour & your second 'baby'! :D Woot!
u2 fights against THE LOUDNESS WARS?
Okay, maybe you're not coming out and speaking against it, but the new album is a welcome turnaround from 2009's No Line on the Horizon which had typical 2000s heavy handed dynamic range compression/poor mastering. The new album is up to DR9, that's u2's most dynamic release since the 90s, WELL DONE LADS!! (not including reissues) In terms of studio releases: 2014 - Songs of Innocence - DR9 2009 - No Line on the Horizon - DR6 2004 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb - DR5 (yikes!) 2000 - All That You Can't Leave Behind - DR8 1997 - Pop - DR8 1993 - Zooropa - DR12 You have to go back to 1993 to see u2's last fully dynamic album (such a shame how much music has been decimated with heavy handed drc), but the new album is the most dynamic since that time. Huge kudos to whomever was behind the decision not to SLAM the crap out of the music.

It's been a while...
It was perfect timing. You have made so many people happy today. Fans, and yet to be fans, have music to lift a weary soul today. Thank you for every U2 moment, from hearing Drowning Man on a christian radio station in !983 till now. You have helped shape my view of this world in the most wonderful way. Love, BunnyKickButt PS I'm also looking forward to hearing you on Scott Aukerman's and Adam Scott's "U Talkin' U2 To Me?" Can that be a thing that happens???

Love U2
Love Song for Someone. Just listening to the entire album now.

Brilliant
The album is great and you can feel the hard work U2 poured into this album. Worth the wait...and no Bono we didn't forget about you. Just always thirsty for more. When you are great there is never enough to satisfy. Already looking forward to our epic continuation with Songs of Experience! (Not to mention the future tour?!)

As with every U2 album, it gets better every time you listen to it. It reveals more each time. This one got me on the first listen. "Very good is the enemy of Great." This is truly GREAT!!!!
