Sachs and Bono In Africa

14 Jan 2002
Bono is travelling to Africa with long-time fellow debt campaigner Jeffrey Sachs to address members of the Southern African Development Community.
According to development agency Oxfam, Bono and Harvard University economist Sachs will be discussing with leaders of the 14-nation Southern African Development Community ways of diverting money saved by debt relief into fighting poverty and AIDS in the region.

The pair are scheduled to meet with the heads of state today, Monday, in Blantyre, Malawi, before leaving for the capital, Lilongwe.
In Lilongwe on Tuesday, Sachs will present findings of a World Health Organization report that says increased health spending on the world's poorest people would boost economic development and ease poverty levels.

According to Oxfam, Malawi president Bakili Muluzi, chairman of the 14-member economic group whose members rank among the poorest countries in the world, is holding the special summit in Blantyre to discuss ongoing fighting in the Congo and the deepening political crisis in Zimbabwe.
