Sheffield on the Horizon

20 Aug 200970

Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield tonight, a show that went out live on air to milllions of radio listeners in the UK and around the world to U2.com subscribers with a live audio stream.

U2 first played here in May 1980 on the 11'O'Clock Tick Tock Tour and last played the city in June 1992 on ZOO TV. And there's another connection: Sheffield is the city that gave the world Willie Williams, the band's Show Designer, who is celebrating a birthday - something 45,000 of us joined in with tonight, by singing him Happy Birthday.

'Where are we going?' Bono asked, as the band introduced 'Magnificent'. 'Rotherham, Doncaster, Leeds, Manchester?' Sheffield was the northern town he was looking for and Sheffield gave the penultimate night of the European 360 Tour a show to remember.

Were you at the show or listening in online? There was huge demand from U2.com subscribers and tens of thousands of you tuned in from around the world... Let us know what you thought of the show - and where in the world you were when you were listening.

So just Cardiff now and then Europe is done... and North America beckons in September.

Here's what they played.

Breathtaking
As a fan of U2 for 24 years now and having attended every tour since The Joshua Tree tour in 1987 and having waited a very long four years to see them live again I can only say that tonights concert at Don Valley was as described above, from the huge Mexican Wave, which seemed as if it would never end to the final strings of Moment of Surrender they had ne in their power. The highlights for me were Streets, Unforgettable Fire (last heard live on Joshua Tree tour), With Or Without You, Ultraviolet, One and all of the new stuff, only disappointment is that they did not perform such classics as Bad and New Years Day or even Out of Control. Thank you for one of the best nights of my life, please come back again sooner then four years.

A NIGHT NEVER TO FORGET.........
I CANT BELIVE THAT IT COULD MATCH OR EVEN BETTER THE FIRST TIME I SAW U2 IN 2005, BUT IT DID, I NEVER STOPPED TO SMILE FROM THE OPENING OF BREATH WITH LARRY TO THE LAST GOODBYE AND THANK YOU FROM BONO. I WAITED IN THE QUE FROM 8.30 IN THE MORNING TO GET INTO THE GOLDEN CIRCLE AND IT WAS WORTH EVERY MINUTE. I WAS STOOD ON EDGE'S SIDE RIGHT AGAINST THE CAT WALK. ALL OF THE SHOW WAS FANTASTIC WITH NO LOW POINTS, THE BEST BIT FOR ME WAS ULTRAVIOLET. REVAMPED IT WITH THE LAZER JACKET AND SWINGING MICROPHONE, FANTASTIC. THE "SPACE STATION" TAKES YOUR BREATH AWAY, ITS LIKE NOTHING BEEN SEEN BEFORE, GREAT JOB BY WILLIE WILLIAMS. JUST WANA SAY THANK YOU FOR COMING TO SHEFFIELD, A SMALL TOWN SO CLOSE TO ME, AND COME BACK SOON!!!!!!! DONT LEAVE IT SO LONG NEXT TIME AND GOOD LUCK FOR AMERICA

EXHAUSTING!
I've had the pleasure of seeing U" many times but this was by far the most emotional. I shouted, laughed, sang and cried and at the end of the show was exhausted. Still can't get UltraViolet out of my head!! Thanks for the joy boys x

Thanks for the streaming
Many thanks for the so good audio quality streaming, even if we had one hour late than the real show. It was a great evening for many of us who saw the show, we were @ sheffield with heart as well this evening. And events like this broadcast is also what we do expect for U2.com subscriber, so thanks. This is of course now the ultimate bootleg for the 360 european tour ;)

Thank You Boys!
What can I say ? Better than ever in Sheffield. Had a wonderful day from start to finish - we were about 300th in the queue at 9.45am - but it was well worth the wait! Bono's voice sounded better than ever and what a show those boys put on for us! Loved all the songs, especially Stuck in a Moment and Magnificent (when Bono was on the bridge). Brilliant stage and a awesome sound - thank you so much U2!! Ps thanks to Steve and Rick for keeping us entertained in the queue and for looking after my mum (Pauline). Thank you also to Steve and Steve for another memorable night - you made it very sepcial for us again! See you both at the next tour !!! XXX

My wife and I spent our first anniversary in the red-zone and it was awesome...my first show was Paris in 1987...22years later and the band have moved into another hemisphere in terms of both playing live and as a spectacle!!!! WELL DONE U2 360 AND ALL INVOLVED :)

Sheffield
I listened online and was very much looking forward to hearing some of the new songs. Much to my disappointment, I thought the band didn't do themselves justice. However, to appreciate U2 live, is to hear AND see them and I'm hoping by the time they get to Vancouver (end of October) that they'll have all the kinks worked out. OH, and please don't butcher "Crazy" again. I'd rather they not play it than have to listen to what I heard at Sheffield. Please. I'm begging of you. Best song on the album and it sounded like it should have been a 'b' side dance version. sad.

Sheffield 4 London 0
The atmosphere and performance last night put the opening night at Wembley into the shade. As a fanclub member I got my 4 tickets for Wembley 14th and my sister (also a member) got hers for Sheffield. This enabled me and my Mrs to go to both gigs. Don Valley is considerably smaller than Wembley (Mr 'State the Bleedin Obvious') and the result was an intimate gig with much better sound and excitement - standing rather than sitting might have made a big difference though! The setlist was identical to Wembley yet it felt like a different gig. Thankfully the evening was dry and sunny and added to the 'feel good factor'. The mixture of new and old material was well considered and sequenced. The dance version of 'Crazy' postively buzzed and Adam's bass was awesome thoroughout. The boys played rock 'n roll and didn't they look like they enjoyed it! My only regrets: 1. We weren't treated to Bad - apparently Wembley were lucky enough to get it on the Saturday. 2. I didn't get tickets for Cardiff this time round! (Vertigo saw us go to City of Manchester, Twickenham and the Millenium). 3. I didn't have the equipment to record the show off the radio. Can't wait for the next tour and wearing my 'Longest Day '85' T-Shirt again!

Special!
I watched them at Don Valley Stadium, and all I can say is wow! No words can describe it, this is the first time I've seen them live and it wont be the last.. They blew me away completely blew me away. I loved how the band, and the audience sang "Happy Birthday" to Willie Williams, hes a genius too, and for all those people, who said Bono's vocals werent upto scratch.. all I have to say is.. AS IF!

going crazy tonight
I was lucky enough to go to Sheffield and was blown away by the huge talent of the band and this tours set (thank you Willie) Old shorties like me, amongst thousands of big people had a fair chance of seeing the guys. Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam - never stop playing, for as long as i can breath, I WILL FOLLOW!

Top night !
I arrived home back from the sheffield concert elated once again. My 9th U2 concert since the Joshua tree tour. I have loved U2 since my teens nearley 40 now ( yikes !! ) hence the aching bones today !The anticipation was huge for this show, managed to get to the front just behind the red zone, had a fantastic veiw, atmosphere amazing, However was disapointed with some of the song choices, I was holding out for alittle bit of " Party Girl" or, " I will folllow, or " Gloria " some older classics would have made it perfect for me. All said and done, Bono sounded on top form, Larry walked straight in front of me, Ive always had a soft spot for him so happy days. Thanks for a great night xx

Bored to death at work
I was with my secretary at work (@ Fortaleza, Brasil), signing tons of paper, when I realised the concert had started. Well, It made the rest of my day much better. The problem was that I finished signing everything, but I didn't want to go home, since I would miss the rest of it!!!

My Jaw Aches
WOW!! Never seen anything like this. My jaw aches from non stop smiling from start to finish of the show. I was lucky enough to be on the pre-sale Horizon list(thanks U2 .com) and managed to get great seats next to the tunnel where the band came into the stadium. Ive never been so close to U2 and was a bit starstruck! The guys walked past me about 10 feet away and they have a great aura about them. I cant begin to explain everything, the stage, sound, music, songs, atmosphere, crowd, security, warm up bands, lights, visuals, technology, everything blew me away. I have watched U2 grow from 1983 onwards and have always been a big fan. I have been to every tour since 1987 but never seen anything like his. I believe this is the future for stadium rock technology. Stand out songs for me were "Streets"(favourite song) "Unforgetable fire" and the remix of "Go crazy". The rest were just brilliant. Im still getting goose bumps just reminissing. Thanks U2.com and thanks U2, dont stay away too long.

Rocking This Town
Gr8 to see my lifelong heroes rocking my home city tonight. Another superb performance from the foursome. Highlights being Breathe (even if a touch early in proceedings), Unknown Caller and those old stalwarts from the golden decade that is the 80's, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Still Haven't Found Unforgettable Fire. A gr8 set list. All I can say is come back soon and rock this town once more.

The Best
Amazing show, fantastic night. We travelled from North Wales and stayed in Sheffield, drove past the stadium in a taxi this morning and saw the set being dismantled, felt sad that the show was over but the memories of the night will stay with these four friends forever. Hope to see U2 tour again in the future x
