U2.com slipped into the studio a few days back where the band played us the new tracks and we were blown away. A kind of musical autobiography, the eleven new songs chart their earliest influences from 70s rock and punk to early 80s electronica and soul... and reveal how music changed everything. As Bono sings in the lead song, 'The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)' 'I woke up when the miracle occurred/ Heard a song that made some sense out of the world...'

Exploring themes of home and family, relationships and discovery, detailed liner notes fill out the picture with resonant stories, like one of the first gigs the teenage band got into.

'The 4 members of U2 went to see the Ramones playing in the state cinema in Dublin without thinking about how we were going to get in. we had no tickets and no money.. My best friend Guggi had a ticket and he snuck us through a side exit he pried open. The world stopped long enough for us to get on it. Even though we only saw half the show, it became one of the great nights of our life....'

Songs of Innocence was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood. The album closes with 'The Troubles' featuring the distinctive vocals of Swedish indie singer-songwriter Lykke Li.

Here's the eleven tracks: The Miracle (of Joey Ramone), Every Breaking Wave, California (There Is No End To Love), Song For Someone, Iris (Hold Me Close), Volcano, Raised By Wolves, Cedarwood Road, Sleep Like A Baby Tonight, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, The Troubles.

On October 13th the physical release of Songs of Innocence comes with a 24-page booklet. A deluxe, gatefold double album, contains an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks: Lucifer's Hands, The Crystal Ballroom, The Troubles (Alternative version) and Sleep Like a Baby Tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake)

The album will also be available as a gatefold, double white-vinyl LP with an exclusive remix of "The Crystal Ballroom".

Newborn
This new album really is like a newborn: I got up with it and went to bed with it. And after a few days I can't imagine life without it. Thanks U so much, it was worth waiting every day these 5 years! <3

....and you are my miracle
....and you are my miracle...listened for the first time on the morning of 9/11. Never have I felt such opposing emotions. One part of me still mourning the death of my cousin Steven Paterson who died 13 years ago as the first plane hit AND listening to your wondrous new Baby! Sadness and Awe...I felt more alive than I had ever felt. I found something I had lost after my Mom died couple years ago, some little piece of me came back along with something new. I am also a rock singer longing to make a difference, and every time I feel discouraged and almost hopeless, you sweep me off my feet and point me towards the dream of awakening. Again and again, over and over ever since this NYC Italian girl walked into a movie theater in Forest Hills Queens in 1988 and witnessed what I consider one of the best movies ever... "Rattle and Hum". You have often said that you get things you don't deserve well I feel the same about what you give through your music, but I'll keep taking what you are giving anyway! Love and Peace....

Can't wait for the tour!
'Songs of Innocence' tour will silence all skeptics...as any seasoned U2 rank knows...I am overjoyed to have another GIFT from U2!

It was just like Christmas morning, waki
It doesn't get any better than this. Songs of Innocence miraculously appearing for free on my I-Tunes. So nice of the band to thank fans with this album for all the money spent on concert tickets, albums, books, t-shirts over the years. Loyalty to the band has been rewarded by loyalty to their fans!! So cool :) I can't get enough of Raised by Wolves. I keep hitting repeat and singing along... And getting lost in the sweeping strings synths on The Troubles...I just close my eyes and let the song take me to my own happy, private place...eventually letting the hard, crisp guitars of Cedarwood Road bring me back to earth. So many great songs, so many great feelings. Can't wait to play it again!! Bono, Edge, Adam, Larry...thanks so much boys. Slaint!!!!

U2 is MATCHLESS! Brazil luv u!
OMG! So many years... I really luv this band! I really sing their all musics... I'm a brazilian singer... Everything I do is inspired for U2. Many videos in my teenage... When I was trying imitate Bono... Many histories... Many nights with a guitar and friends... When we sang U2 songs... It's not possible to say everything! But, I really need say: THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Songs Of Innocence is absolutely incredible! I love the rhythm, chords, letters... Bono, I luv u! Edge, Adam and Larry, we love you! Your musical quality is matchless! Brazil is yours! Please, make new and new and new albuns... My heart, my soul... U2 is my food! The food of my soul! God bless you more and more!
The relief!
Bono, Edge, Adam, Larry — this is sincerely your best work in years. Thank you for making it. I used to love U2, but in recent years I've been getting my fixes elsewhere (Alt-J, The National, Joan As Policewoman, XX, that kind of stuff). I've always loyally and curiously bought the latest U2 album, but on recent ones I've found fewer and fewer tracks to get excited and chatty about. Part of this is undoubtedly me! But not all of it. On 'No Line on the Horizon', only 'Moment of Surrender' had me listening over and over again. But 'Songs of Innocence' is ripe with infectious, fresh music. I like all of it, and absolutely love 'Song for Someone', 'Volcano', 'Raised by Wolves', 'Sleep Like a Baby Tonight', 'This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now' and 'The Troubles'. These are such delicate, raucous, original — utterly U2-y — songs. Thank you for making me very proud to be a U2 fan again. I can't wait for the acoustic versions — you should do that with every album! — and whatever happens next. Good luck and thank you again, for everything.

Songs of Innocence
I love the new album! I downloaded the minute it appeared on my iPhone and iPad!! I have been a fan since the 80's and watched Pride in the Name of Love on the Rolling Stone list of top 100 songs of 1984. Joshua Tree was my go to album in college to escape the typical angst of being an early 20 something in the 80's. I still reach for Joshua Tree when I need a boost or I just want to hear Bono sing and Edge play. U2 has been my fave band for so long I cannot imagine life without your music! Your music has been a constant in my life, when I didn't have many other constants! I just wanted you to know that I thought the free release of Songs was a brilliant maneuver to expose the new generation to your music. Ignore the haters!! You're U2!! The music is all that matters.

Brilliant is the word
Amazing U2 13th release. Can't imagine anything better. "Someone else is in control" lyric from 'The Troubles' Certainly some higher being was in control of this one. Thank you U2

Brilliant. Thank you. Best songwriting y
You guys nailed it on this record. I can't stop listening. As Bono has been saying in interviews, the tunes are there. And wow, the song writing is perhaps the best yet. There isn't a song on the record that is second rate. Thank you U2 and I can't wait to see you on tour!!!

Finally...My Heart Can Open Again and Re
The new U2 album release caused quite a stir with iTunes members either be elated about the free album in their cloud or those who took angrily took to the web to denounce U2, the album and, well, everything U2. I for one was elated to get the announcement about the new album and also get the music at the same instant. I keep listening to the song "The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)" as there are lyrics I can really relate to. I place myself in Bono's shoes when hearing Joey Ramones for the first time and that is exactly how it made me feel; "The most beautiful sound I ever heard". Next on my fav list are: "Every Breaking Wave" and "Song for Someone". Yes, as Bono would indefinitely say, I am a romantic. Every relationship has its challenges and this really hit home for me in "Wave", "Are we ready to be swept off our feet, and stop chasing, every breaking wave?" After feeling angst and swept away with memories and feelings (of pain and loss), I was raised up into the sky, floating on the melody of "Song for Someone". And, yes, I felt this was written for me. "You've got eyes that can see right through me. You're not afraid of anything they've seen." Beautiful lyrics. "Iris (Hold Me Close) actually brought tears to my eyes as I knew that this was, indeed, about Bono's Mother. This song is intensely personal and I feel honoured that it was shared with us, the fans. "The ache in my heart is so much a part of who I am". When I was younger I used to listen to the "October" album so much. The song "Tomorrow" was always gut-wrenching for me as I could hear the pain in Bono's voice as he sang so desperately, "Will you be back tomorrow? Can I sleep tonight?". I feel that "Iris" is Bono's way of coming to terms with his monther's death as a man, not the boy he was when she died. "Iris playing on the strand. She buries the boy beneath the sand, Iris says that I will be the death of her. It was not me". I could go on and on about this one, but I see this song as a gift. Thank you Bono. I love this album and have been listening to it over and over. I need the vinyl when it comes out!!! Thank you for the opportunity to review the album and I look forward to another tour. ~ A devoted fan of 27 years.

The Most Beautiful Sound I'd Ever Heard
Songs Of Innocence is another masterpiece from U2. It sounds fresh, cohesive, but with necessary contrasts. It sounds modern and classic. It sounds from 2014, but without betraying the magic roots of the band. ¡It's wonderful! The future is yours Adam, Bono, Edge and Larry. U2 music is the only thing that matters. A new U2 album is the best gift. Thank you

Genius! One word!
I've listened to the whole album and the 48 minutes passed like one. At first I was really interested by the sound of the songs, the production then I was amazed when I heard the song "Raised By Wolves" and finally I was blown away after I heard "The Troubles"... U2, keep up the amazing music! Thank You!

Like a prayer
I do not underwrite any creed, but to me U2's songs are little prayers or meditations - poetry clad in wonderful music, spiritual signposts guiding and accompanying me on my life's journey. There is no end to love. Love you, guys!

Love never ends
Ok I have tried to listen to the album again (and again). Though I can't say I am bowled over like everyone else seems to be, because I KNOW you have more in you than this record shows. I just wanted to say, I STILL LOVE YOU ALL as before!! The songs are there, the music on this album is good. I'm not sold on the lyrics and for some reason Bono appears to be singing away and separately from the band but hey, it's a new U2 album!

Thank you!
Songs of innocence.... this melodically perfection no.13 is a superlative demonstration of songs of experience by the greatest rock band of all times. WOW! I can only say thank you to the ridiculously addictive drummer Larry Mullen, infamously elegant performer Adam Clayton, electrifying thrilling guitarist Dave Evans and the impossible for me to get his autograph in person Paul Hewson. Free to the world......... Hats off! I can't wait to add the hard copies to my collection and looking forward to witness my 33rd U2 live performance, I will follow! Thank you mates!
