The 43rd Grammy Award nominations have been announced and U2 feature in three - even though the new album was released too late to qualify this year.
The single Beautiful Day, which was released in the qualifying period, earned nominations in three categories: Record of the Year; Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
A number of artists received three or more nominations each. Five nominations were handed to Dr. Dre (including Producer Of The Year) and Destiny Child's Beyoncé Knowles (including Song and Record Of The Year for (Say My Name); four each to producer/songwriter LaShawn Daniels, artists/songwriters LeToya Luckett, LaTavia Roberson and Kelendria Rowland of Destiny's Child, rapper Eminem (including Album Of The Year for The Marshall Mathers LP), country mainstay Vince Gill, producer/songwriter Rodney Jerkins, R&B singer Joe and arranger/conductor Vince Mendoza; and three each to Sheryl Crow, D'Angelo, former Nirvana member Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters, producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Travis), Macy Gray, former Eagle Don Henley, Faith Hill, blues great B.B. King, Madonna, Aimee Mann, Brian McKnight, 'N Sync, new jazz/soul diva Jill Scott, Sisqo, Ricky Skaggs, Steely Dan and U2.
According to the official announcement, the Record Of The Year category includes singles from a broad range of artists, including 'N Sync's ode to its independence "Bye Bye Bye," Madonna's celebratory "Music," U2's stirring return 'Beautiful Day,' Destiny's Child's 'Say My Name' and Macy Gray's 'I Try.'
The latter three also received Song Of The Year nominations along with Faith Hill's 'Breathe' and Lee Ann Womack's 'I Hope You Dance.'
Winners in the 500+ nominations from the 100 categories will be revealed for the first time during the 43rd Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast on February 21. The three-hour show will originate from Staples Center in Los Angeles and be broadcast on CBS-TV at 8 p.m. (EST/PST).
