Two Shots In The Casino

28 Apr 2004
Two Shots Of Happy and One Shot of Sad, originally written by Edge and Bono for Frank Sinatra, looks set for a new life.

'The Casino', an American docu-drama which opens in June on Fox TV, centres on two young guys who have bought the Golden Nugget Casino in downtown Las Vegas - longtime home to Frank Sinatra - and plan to return it to its 'Rat Pack' glory days.

At the heart of their plans is a new singer, played by the Canadian performer Matt Dusk - and one of Matt's standout performance pieces is Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad.

In fact, in real life, Dusk has already recorded the track for his debut album on Decca. The album was recorded in Miami, Toronto and at Abbey Road Studios in London with the help of a 42-piece string section from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dusk says he was drawn to record Two Shots both because of the song itself and because of the poignant story behind it.

'I would have to say that Two Shots is one of my favourites on the album because it involves two of my favourite artists of all time and is an incredible song. Bono wrote it for Frank Sinatra but unfortunately Sinatra died before he got the chance to record it, so Bono released it as a B-side to a single but it kind of got lost in the woodwork, which is so easy for a track to do. It's a great honour for me to record it.'

U2 released the song in December 1997 as a b-side to the If God Will Send His Angels single (more here).

The Casino opens on June 14th on Fox TV.
