Your Band. Your Questions.

6 Mar 2017285

This Thursday it’s thirty years to the day since the release of The Joshua Tree and Adam, Bono, Edge and Larry will be live online to answer your questions about this iconic record.

Ask them anything about the legendary 1987 career-defining release The Joshua Tree and the subsequent sold out tour which saw U2 take The Joshua Tree on the road, playing stadiums for the very first time.

What’s your question?

Which was the song that nearly never made it?
What was your personal highlight of 1987 ?
What was it like recording in Adam’s house?
Which one song on the record proved the biggest surprise?

Your band, your questions - post them in the comments below or on FaceBook, TwitterInstagram, Google + and Tumblr. Use the hashtag #AskU2 #U2TheJoshuaTree2017

Then tune in to the band’s facebook page this Thursday at 3pm (EST) to catch U2 live from the studio… answering your questions.

UPDATE: If you missed it...Celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Joshua Tree #askU2 #TheJoshuaTree2017

Good times at U2 concerts
Love this album especially Running to stand still "Did you ever think that people would use your songs for movies, weddings etc and which song where you unsure that would make it" can't wait to see you in Vancouver BC. It's a tradition ever since Joshua Tree that me and my brother go to your concerts. Thanks for being so creative it inspires me Kathy

Favorite song on the album
We all have our own personal favorite song from Joshua Tree. I am curious what song is your personal favorite. And why. Thanks. And as an aside, 30 years later I can still remember how I felt when I heard the first notes of the album. I fell in love with it then and it is still my all-time favorite U2 album.

People Get Ready
Greetings, U2! When did you start playing Curtis Mayfield's classic "People Get Ready" on the tour and asking someone from the audience to play Bono's guitar? And will you be doing that again? I went to several shows during the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 and knew that when you played it that Bono had been inviting someone from the audience to play his guitar during the song. So I had 2nd row center seats in Austin (where I was going to college at the time) and somehow got his attention when he asked if anyone wanted to play his guitar. I can play guitar but I was nervous so Bono showed me the three simple chords (see picture). Eventually, I calmed down and since the guitar was wireless I had the audacity to walk all the way around the stage and play for the audience and then come back around and finish the song with a Pete Townshend windmill. After that, Bono asked me a few questions about myself and then repeated it all to the audience (I told him I had played in a band called Trouble in Suburbia, and he said that's the kind of trouble I like to be in myself and then the band launched into "Bad"). After shaking hands with the band, I kept the guitar pick but jumped back into audience when I should have asked to go backstage! Anyway, it was an amazing experience and something I'll always remember... I am bringing my two sons (Raj, 12, and Ravi, 8) to the show in Philadelphia on June 18 (which also happens to be Father's Day) and would love to repeat the song or get backstage passes this time so they could meet you all! Cheers, and thank you for the music and memories. Scott

Streets to Mothers
Are you intending to play the songs from the album in the same order as they are on the album or will you mix it up? Reverse order may work!!

Should it stay or should it go?
Which song was the most contentious to put on the record and why?

The worst moments of the Tour
I was fortunate to spend the Summer of 1987 following the tour around the UK and also was at the RFK Stadium show, Washington DC on a rainy night when Bono went head over heels and dislocated his shoulder. Was that the worst moment of the tour? or was it Edges crap rugby kick at Cardiff Arms Park?

bsides as encore
I always wondered how people would feel when you just play 11 songs at a u2 concert, when you normally play 22 songs. and i always had this idea that U2 should do a B-side tour..... will you play bside songs like the sweetest thing to extend the show or go into rattle and hum mode? its a good valid question

Will One Tree Hill be Coming Down Under
Hi guys, its Scott here from Auckland, New Zealand...I have to ask straight off, will you be bringing the Joshua Tree Tour/Songs of Experince down under? I especially ask RE: The JT Tour as the Album itself is dedicated to our fellow Kiwi Greg Carroll (G-Dub) and contains "One Tree Hill"...which gives U2 and NZ that special connection!!! By the way - are you aware that new trees have been planted at the top of one tree hill?...and I hope and pray that i see you again when the stars fall from the sky.... God Bless you and keep you always.

Mothers of the Disappeared
In Croke Park the band might consider dedicating 'Mothers of the Disappeared' to the mothers and their babies who suffered and often died in Ireland's so called Mother and baby homes over many decades. As we grapple with this horrible legacy the song has a huge resonance #AskU2 #U2TheJoshuaTree2017 Steve, Ireland

Lost my innocence - Thanks!
Cheers lads for a great weekend in Dubs 87 - lost my virginity with a young girl I really loved at the time...life moves on however. Did you ever really invisage how 'big' and accessible you would become on a global scale in '87...and how that might accelerate at an incredible rate - or where you like us all - kind of oblivious to what was lurking around the corner in terms of technological developments that would surely influence the next stage in the bands 'life'?

#ASKU2#U2THEJOUSHATree2017 Ok, I want to side track, but as a fan for 28year I think we are cool. 1. Coming out from the Joshua Tree tour how long did it take U2 to rejuvenate into Achtung Baby (music and swagger)? that's a powerful record by the way! 2. Gotta admit Joshua Tree songs has kinda been a great backbone for all tours- do you guys agree? 3. Will you guys play (streets) at the Liquor Store if granted the approval? Thanks guys-See you at the Bowl Pasadena.

Joshua Tree 2017 and related tracks
#AskU2 Will you be tying in songs from War, Unforgettable Fire and Rattle and Hum into the new live shows. So much of that material works together well. Would love to hear the full band play A Sort of Homecoming, Wire, Like a Song, Seconds, Silver and Gold, Heartland... so many great ones.

2 simple questions
1. What is the motivation which keeps you 4 all together and still touring 40+ years on and 30 years after TJT? 2. Do you remember The Longest Night in Milton Keynes UK in 1985 with The Ramones? Awesome, amazing, I was never the same after that!!! See you in July in Rome and Dublin xxx

Memorable Moment
#AskU2 #U2JoshuaTreeTour2017 Q1 -What (does each band member) was the most memorable part of the original tour for you? Q2 - How did Rattle and Hum come to be created? It seems like it was almost a backdraft of Joshua Tree. Thank you - I'm a LONG LONG time fan and concert goer!! And thanks for the hug at the KROQ breakfast in about 2002 Bono.

Trip through your wires
Is it true that one of the inspirations for "Trip through your wires" is the story of Jesus' Via Crucis with Mery Magdalene comforting him? I've always liked biblical lyrics in U2 songs ("Until the end of the world" e.g.). Any other biblical reference in The Joshua Tree?

Human instrument
For Bono, Hello Bono, I was wondering if you find it difficult vocally to sing some of the songs from the Joshua Tree. The vocals on all U2 music are incredible. It would seem that as the years go by it would be difficult to sing some of these songs. How do you prepare? Since your voice is your instrument I know it is more difficult. Thank you, and thanks for all the beautiful vocal performances throughout your career.

The Quiet Volume of "Exit"
Why is the recorded version of "Exit" on the JT LP so much quieter than the other tracks on the LP?
