Three Pop Songs

Three Pop Songs

'Edge I'd describe as a gardener, Larry as a chef, Adam as a keen polo expert and Bono as a very enthusiastic beachcomber.'

That's Howie B,  'vibemaster' and producer, with Flood, of Pop,  released twenty five years ago this week.

'They wanted to make something different. They had this hunger to make new music. Pop is a magic album. I listen to it, there's music there, songs, beats. I'm glad I had something to do with it...'

Discotheque, the first single, was followed by Staring At The Sun, Last Night on Earth, Please and If God Will Send His Angels.

But if you had to pick just three songs from the twelve tracks on Pop, what are they…  and why?

Cast your vote here and then tell us why in the comments… and what the album means to you.

A roller-coaster of an album
It's funny I wasn't a big fan of this album when I first heard it. I think that was mainly because it was such a departure from what I knew U2 to be. As time went by I came to love this album and found the songs resonating with me more as an adult. I picked Gone, Staring at the Sun and Last Night on Earth.

Great album
Pop was a great album, so brave and reckless, innovative and inspired. It is a pity that it did not have the success it deserves, and it is a pity that the same band subsequently neglected it. Please and Gone are in my personal top 20 of all u2 songs

Can we rewind it just Once more
Pop is my favorite U2 album, the More innovative and the more surprising album they ever made. Everytime U2 was releasing a new album, everybody was wondering what’s next, because every U2 album sounded so different back then. I was waiting for this album and the answer was Discothèque, a Song I´m still listening to. I was waiting midnight with a taperecorder. This Song was so different, so good, still is. When I bought Pop, Mofo became immediatly my favorite song, I was impressed by the band, Better Than Prodigy and Chemical Brothers, this song Sounds techno but is soulfull. And Wake up Dead Man is so haunting, a desperate prayer. Thank you for this album. Please, U2, Blast us once more. F

Boxed Set
Gents...would love a boxed set for Pop. Still believe it's a great one. Tells a story of the millennium from the wild abandon to the serious reflection on the end of the world. There are so many remixes and the Red One collaboration that should make the cut. Please!

Finally (a bit) attention for POP
The original pop-version of Gone is one of their best u2songs ever. The u2 fanworld is waiting for a special deluxe edition of POP, with unreleased versions and 5.1 hd mix +blu ray from an unreleased Popmart show.

Why no celebration??!
Why oh why is there no celebration of this album from The band or the fan club?! A little article asking us to vote for our 3 favorite tracks…IS THAT ALL? I really think that the band and the fan club really underestimate how much this album is adored by a minority of fans. It is definitely worthy of a box set/special edition etc. BIG opportunity missed..and it’s a BIG disappointment! Love POP…you should too!!! Give it the love that it deserves, U2!

Another really difficult choice!
An album I return to regularly. A band with real guts. Nearly a masterpiece comparable to Achtung Baby. Would have been interesting to cut a raw version in 1996 or if they had took another 3-6months longer on the finishing. Gone and Mofo are a top 3 must! Gone for Staring at the Sun for no.3 - but it was hard to leave several others out inc Please & Do You Feel Loved.

Pop love
I bought the Pop album on iTunes three years ago. I truly believe that this album was truly ahead of its time. It doesn’t sound dated. It sounds just as good as it did in 1997. I wished I was able to experience the PopMart tour but the music speaks for itself.

Do you feel Loved + Mofo+ Miami
It feels like it was just yesterday I bought this record and heard the press conference on K-mart. Do you feel loved (?) is an amazing pop song. Mofo sounds like NIN / Ministry on acid trip -Love that ! Miami has great riffs and wants me to go to Miami. Sounds obscure, dark and dirty. P.S. Larry was really hot and Bono best era for sure ! Cannot wait to hear new / improved versions of Staring at the sun and God will send his angels now they have grow older as a band and are better musicians ;-)

POP is 25 years old???
It is hard to believe POP is 25 years old already. My favorite tracks at the moment are "Mofo" the sound of that song live was simply amazing. It made the opening just spectacular. "If God will send his Angels" is just an amazing song that I would love to hear back live again someday. Plus is a song that is some kind of prayer to God, at this moment when Ukraine is suffering tremendously the invasion of Russia. "Gone" just because it is an amazing song live as well.

Gone, Please and Wake Up Dead Man are the three fav tracks for us..! 3 powerful songs with great meaning. And great music that embrace the lyrics..! We only wish we'd heard Wake Up Dead Man live just for one time! And not as a snippet... Greetings from Greece!
