Best of... the Noughties?

31 Dec 2009339

It's December 31st 2009, the end of a decade which saw the band release three studio albums.

The 'noughties' for U2 started with All That You Can't Leave Behind in 2000, then came How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb in 2004 and this year came No Line on The Horizon.

Was it a single release that became a global hit or an obscure album track that you think most people still haven't discovered?

Was it a track they've yet to play live or a song that no live show can now be complete without?

Was it something they wrote which doesn't feature on one of the three studio albums? (There's a handful of tracks like this... when you come to think of it.)

Your call. Tell us what was the ONE greatest piece of work the band created during the last decade... and in a couple of sentences tell us why.

Best of the Noughties: Moment of Surren
Hands-down, the best song by U2 over the last decade. From the raw vocals to the imagery the lyrics invoke (for me, at least), and based on accounts of how the song "happened" in the room while recording, it's simply magic. One was the song of the nineties, and Moment of Surrender is the song for the noughties...Brilliant!
THANK YOU
JUST WANTED TO SAY .......THNAK YOU

On the right track
Definitely think that Horizon is the best stuff that the lads have produced since Achtung and I want to hear more from this line of enquiry. The only track that didn't sit well with me on Horizon was Crazy- felt like a radio-freindly afterthought and is a bit like a campy number from a musical. In fact, i've been listening a lot to the original running order (as showcased on the Linear DVD) which swaps Crazy with Winter. The album really flows in this order- a real heavy weight album. Winter, Breathe and Unknown Caller really stand out for me.

MAGNIFICENT
BECAUSE "NO LINE ON THE HORIZON" IS THE BEST ALBUM OF HISTORY, TOGETHER WITH "ACTHUNG BABY" AND "THE JOSHUA TREE". BUT THE BEST SINGLE, FOR ME, IS "WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME". MASSIMILIANO FROM ITALY

Best Singular piece of work?
Hmmm. That's a hard one, for even in the last 10 years, the U2 have released some high quality material. I look at the other comments posted and everyone has very good reasons for their choices. But for me, and with a lot of hesitation, I think their finest individual piece of is Original of the Species. It has the lot and it makes for an extremely high quality tune. great melody, lyrics to die for (beautifully sung, as well), tight rhythm and wonderful harmony by Edge. for me this is the song which epitomises what U2 are. A band truly at the top of their game. Bravo! and roll on Seville in September.

Live ultra violet ..........
Sheffield 2009- after following u2 through eighties after listening to radio 1 and hearing two hearts beat as one and wondering who these boys were, then nineties pop spectacle to the noughties where appreciation of the band and the talent of the edge to give us unforgetable tunes vertigo, beautiful day and magnificent. Sheffield was a culmination of these periods and the excellent , almost haunting ultra violet blew me away.

Thank You.....U2
I just have to start with a simple Thank You to the lads! I'm so thankful for yet another decade of great music from them. If forced to keep it to one song I would say "Walk On" I get so much from that song every time I hear it live or stuck in So Cal traffic. The felling of Love, Faith, and Hope just really sums up ALL that is U2 for me!

The one song that put U2 back on the musical map was Beautiful Day. Its a joyous song and when played live it still sends shivers up my spine.

10 OF THE BEST...
A great decade, those 3 albums surpassed everything you had done in the past, the last 10 years were fantastic for u2 fans,we were very spoilt, and for that we thank you,,saw some great gigs,as for naming best songs to difficult to do, so as i've said its KITE for me, i listened to all 3 back to back last night, the last decade was u2's best by far,and in opinion NLOTH was thier greatest album to date. A true MASTERPIECE..
delboy66
native son?????
this will ruffle a few feathers but NATIVE SON from the atomic bomb sessions is SO much better than vertigo, the song it eventually became. my other nominations would be KITE, BLINDING LIGHTS, ELECTRICAL STORM and MAGNIFIENT, a u2 song you can dance to without the need for a remix!

ELEVATION LIVE IN BARCELONA
IN SUMMER 2005 A PACKED CAMP NOU SINGING THEIR HEARTS OUT. QUITE AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE ESPECIALLY AS MOST OF THE 80,000 VOICES WERE SINGING IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. IT SHOWED ME A TINY CRUMB FROM THE U2 TABLE OF INTERNATIONAL REACH. FOUR MEN THAT CAN DO THAT EACH NIGHT IN ANY CITY. NOW THAT IS AMAZING.

Tough Question but OOTS FTW!!!
Original of the Species is one of the best songs ever written let alone from the last 3 albums. This song is beautiful! Beautiful melody, great lyrics. It meant a lot to me personaly because I wish that someone were to say those same words to me when I was growing up. Every child should know that they are beautifuly unique and should never try to hide that. Too bad the band never figured out just quite how to pull it off live. Although under appreciated by most, Window in the Skies is a close runner up along with Electrical Storm, No Line on the Horizon, Kite, and White as Snow... oh and Breathe

Walk On
Walk On has been so encouraging to me, as I struggle with depression @ times. It gives hope for healing & a future. The Edge's weeping guitar is so sweet ! Aung San Suu Kyi is such an inspiring example of preserverance. This song always gets a good reception when I perform acoustically. Definitely one of my favs.
Frizzy
Too many but heres a couple
From can't leave behind - Walk on and Kite From Bomb - Original of the Species, blinding lights and miracle drug From Horizon - Magnificent and Electrical Storm...
