Was it a single release that became a global hit or an obscure album track that you think most people still haven't discovered?
Was it a track they've yet to play live or a song that no live show can now be complete without?
Was it something they wrote which doesn't feature on one of the three studio albums? (There's a handful of tracks like this... when you come to think of it.)
Your call. Tell us what was the ONE greatest piece of work the band created during the last decade... and in a couple of sentences tell us why.
It was a wonderful decade with 3 fabulous albums. I became a father in 2005 and then again in 2008 to 2 beautiful boys, so this lyric meant alot to me:
Freedom has a scent
Like the top of a new born baby's head
Peace & Love to all!

CHORUS OF VOICES!!!
There were so many highpoints - Vertigo, Elevation, Boots - the big stadium songs that just made you jump and smile - but Unknown Caller got me - maybe 'cause those birds harmonized so well..... It's a beautiful song and I hope you play it in Denver in 2010!!! (Pretty please.) Happy New Year!

MERCY and GRACE
I cannot comprehend how MERCY didn't make the album back then, it's got tremendous lyrics and a great composition....and soul!
Please release it or play it live in 2010!!!!
On another note, GRACE is prolly my most loved and/but totally underrated song by fellow fans and the public ;).

The wind has blown with "Kite"
"Kite" is for me THE masterpiece of these three albums. Can't explain why. It's a question of feeling and emotion. It's part of these songs that go right to your heart.

Beautiful Day
Beautiful Day, the best of the best of U2 in the last decade. The song is huge. Also, the tour last year was unbelievable. I was lucky to see them 2X and can't wait for Philadelphia in July!

Magnificent
Magnificent is the best U2-song ever. The song was released about the time my second son was born so it gives me a very special feeling hearing the song.
Musically it has all the things in it the band is good at. Adam's bass sounds amazing, Bono's voice better than ever, Edge's guitar work is brilliant, Larry as good as ever.
Live the song is even better than the studioversion, with the extra synths. Also it's a great sing-a-long-song.
Conclusion: The U2-classic of the 00's!!!

Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own
It's hard to choose from so many great songs in the past decade. Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own comes just before Moment Of Surrender. Both songs are really heartfelt and moving. Fast Cars and I'll Go Crazy ... are rocking and funny.

Such a difficult choice!
But I still think it's The ground beneath her feet, who came out on the UK version of All that but was composed for Wim Wenders a year before... Then on the podium come City of blinding lights and Moment of surrender.

Sometimes you cant make it just one song
Sometimes you cant make it on your own. My dad passed away, and 12 hours before his funeral my nephew was born. 40 days later -on his birthday my niece was born. Before he died one day helping my mom jump her car with my portable jumper he looked at me his only dtr and said, "well you are going to be okay." Meaning he didn't have to worry about us if he was gone-I could take care of us. Sometimes you can make it on your own even if you dont want to...

:)
I couldn't possibly choose just one single song, so here's my top 3 from each album. ATYCLB: Kite, HTDAAB: City of Blinding Lights, NLOTH: Magnificent.

Best from the best
When I think of U2 I think of Beautiful Day. But the best? Moment of Surrender is the masterpiece.

Track yet to be played...
Well 'tis the New Year so perhaps a resolution is in order--why not suggest it is the track yet to be played. Besides this doesn't limit me to selecting a single "one" from the albums thus far. I must admit there is a certain allure to a great song title and I was rather taken with "The Naughties" as a potential title for something lastingly impressionable. :-)

Original of the Species
This track epitomizes the band's spirit. What an uplifting celebration of individual beauty. Grounded in signature U2 sound, yes, but in a fresh, clean, contemporary, mature delivery that feels very breakthrough, showcasing the band's ability to just let the song come out in a simple yet gorgeous, unforced way. Some of Edge's most tantalizing, moving guitar ever. Raw spirit from Bono. A moving tribute to the fairer sex.Bonus: probably the best video the band has done.

Live evolutions
I think it's not a greatest piece of work they did, but everything they did, and do, in the live shows. This decade they brought a whole new game to their shows and changed the future of the concert event, cilminating with the 360 show. They began so simple with the club gigs and the elevation tour and just kept growing. They have set a new standard that no ther bands now a days can even come close to on a global level.

It Was a Beautiful Album
For me it was "It Was A Beautiful Day" Something about the clean lines and the soaring sound of the video and the song and the sight of the band on that runway as the jet flew overhead. It mesmerized me from the the very first time I saw Bono on that luggage conveyer belt eating that apple! For me the whole experience was a breath of fresh air called HOPE. Thanks guys!

City of Blinding Lights
This is a no-brainer for me. It was the first song I sampled when the album was made available to hear prior to its release because I thought the title was cool. Every member of the quartet is at his best in this song. I love the lyrics/singing, guitar, bass and drums. When I saw my first U2 show in 2005 in Atlanta, this was the opening song. I freaked and lost my voice too early in the concert!
