Best of... the Noughties?

31 Dec 2009339

It's December 31st 2009, the end of a decade which saw the band release three studio albums.

The 'noughties' for U2 started with All That You Can't Leave Behind in 2000, then came How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb in 2004 and this year came No Line on The Horizon.

Was it a single release that became a global hit or an obscure album track that you think most people still haven't discovered?

Was it a track they've yet to play live or a song that no live show can now be complete without?

Was it something they wrote which doesn't feature on one of the three studio albums? (There's a handful of tracks like this... when you come to think of it.)

Your call. Tell us what was the ONE greatest piece of work the band created during the last decade... and in a couple of sentences tell us why.

Tricky!
"Walk On", "Kite", "Moment of Surrender" or "Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own" are all class. As an Album I think "No Line on the Horizon" is an album that is arguably the best since Achtung Baby. It's constant and flows brilliantly from start to finish!

Walk On
a song that help me a couple times to follow my own way, and it remember me that I only take the good things of life.

The Best Song?
Without a shadow of a doubt, the best song u2 has released this decade has to be beautiful day. Such a beautiful song and one of U2's best ever. Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry, hope you have a Happy New Year and all the best for 2010. :)
Trix001
a song from each of the albums
From the album atyclb, I chose Kite. From the album HTDAB, I chose "Love and Peace or Else". And from the album NLOTH, I choose "Moment of Surrender" Greetings

Its hard to compare, but there's many- Beautiful Day, Walk On, Vertigo, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, City Of Blinding Lights, Even, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight saw the band do something amazingly different yet as always cool!!! Maybe, Moment Of Surrender...... I've named ALL... I cant help it!

ATYCLB=2001?
All That You Can't Leave Behind, my favorite U2 album was not released in 2001. u2 started the decade off great but in the year 2000, not 2001.

Kite for the wonderful words of text

In A Little While
All three albums are absolutely amazing!! With IN A LITTLE WHILE as the absolute stand out, my favourite U2 song of all time! Followed by close runner-up WALK ON, both truly amazing. Really hope they play it in Hannover next year!! Can't Wait!!

Electrical ambience
Haha this decade will be known by their long album names. We have ATYCLB and HTDAAB and finally NLOTH. Love it!! I forgot to add Electrical Storm to my list, what a great song, really nice how it starts slow and builds up with the acoustic guitar makes it a bit different, really nice. U2 is one unique group, you can feel their music deep in your soul and it tingles through your body down into your toes, gives you goosebumps. God really blessed you guys and gave you a magnificant talent to make great music that will inspire people for centuries to come. I can totally see people listening to Pride a 100 years from now haha :D Let's hope!

Mercy
Although this song wasn't released on any of U2's previous three albums, Mercy is the one greatest piece of work the band created during the last decade. The Edge's ringing guitar perfect compliments Bono's brilliant lyrics. This is the type of track that shows U2's truest side. A song like this was the reason these four boys from Dublin formed a band in the first place.

Surrender
Moment of Surrender brings me to tears at a certain point in the song...that is Powerful!! Magnifacent is just that...Magnifacent!! Hope they play both in Paris 2010!!

Fez
It's tough to pick one, there were so many great songs put out by U2 in the last decade. If you would have asked me this prior to the No Line on the Horizon release I would have said in a heart beat - Beautiful Day. Now I think I have to go with Fez - Being Born. It's just a great and unexpected sound and one I can't get enough of right now. I'd love to hear them perform it live.

Beautiful Day, Vertigo, U23D
What a good question! A difficult one. Beautiful day is one of those songs that will ALWAYS make your day feel 10 times better. Vertigo made me the hardcore U2 fan I am today and has to be on the list as well. Walk On's video (the international version) is really inspiring and makes me feel all good inside hehe :D And who could forget U23D??!!! With new 3D TV's coming out, I see an evolution in U2 dvd's ;D Only thing missing on the list is a U2 concert in South Africa...

So many gems!
My favorites are Kite, In a Little While, A Man and a Women. I'm also a very big fan of NLOTH: Cedars of Lebanon, Moment of Surrender and Magnificent. For me, it's an amazing album on so many levels. Looking forward to the next decade with U2!

Best Song
BEAUTIFUL DAY, the song is simply a work of genius. It has the riffs, the lyrics and the emotions that cause people to escape reality. Beautiful Day is an inspiration to everyone.

Unkown caller
There are others like In a little while, Yahweh, A Man and a Woman, Kite, but Unkown caller has a special something. It is a song that rises in you. It's wonderful song

Song of the Decade
Probably Moment of Surrender :-) On a side note, I love it when U2.com fail and not an ordinary fail, an ironic fail; All That You Can't Leave Behind was released in 2000 not 2001 :-)

Best songs
Kite and Magnificent, the best couple of songs of the decade

STUCK IN A MOMENT
Hard question guys... probably STUCK IN A MOMENT is not their best song of the last 10 years (though being a great great song!) but it has a special meaning to me, so this why I chose it....
DiegordnajelA
Are too many!
There's 'Elevation', 'Beautiful Day', 'Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of', 'Vertigo', 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your On', 'Miracle Drug', 'City Of Blinding Lights', 'Magnificent', 'Unknown Caller', 'I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight', 'Breathe'. However, my favorite without a doubt is 'Moment Of Surrender'... But all are great songs of three great albums...

there are so many!
but the one that came into my head first was Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, it is one of the most emotional songs Bono has written and for me one of their very best. The one take video is stunning, leaves me speechless

Moment of Surrender
The three albums are full of songs I love. I can't listen to any of them without being deeply moved. However, the song that I think will probably standout from the three is Moment of Surrender. Loved it when I heard it on the album, but live...it was unbelieveable. I heard that song live for the first time night 1 in Croke Park, and I got chills, and started to cry. Such an amazing song & with the crowd singing it...truly MAGNIFICENT!

Grace or Sometimes
Narrowed it down to 2....which one should I choose....um.... Sometimes you can't make it is my favourite (i think!)

Beautiful day
I think just the title speaks for itself! A wonderful upbeat feelgood song which sounds great live and always has the whole audience cheering and dancing along. I think all the songs released by U2 were great in the noughties but this song and also their first album of the noughties totally eclipsed it for me!

KITE - Earls Court
There was always something special about Kite but it was taken to new levels when Bono sang it that Tuesday night at Earls Court the same day his Father Bob had passed away...................unbelievably emotional
