U2360° TOUR

Jun 4 2011
Seattle, WA, US / Qwest Field
with Lenny Kravitz
70

'Emerald City, shining in the sun, where are you gonna take us?'

It was the question Bono asked as the show opened in Seattle tonight and the answer came during Beautiful Day, with a special message from the shuttle Endeavour.

'Hello Seattle from the International Space Station...' came the greeting from NASA Commander Mark Kelly on the screens circling the stage.

'What's on your mind Commander Kelly ?' asked Bono.

Love was on the Commander's mind as U230° took Seattle into orbit tonight... and safely back to earth again. From the opening chords of Even Better Than The Real Thing to the closing benediction of Moment of Surrender this was a night to remember - with an audience who'll never forget it: 'You're incredible people!'

Thanking everyone for their patience in waiting for these postponed dates, and to Lenny Kravitz for 'giving us lift-off', we had a nod to REM ('It's the end of the world as we know it...') in 'Until The End of the World' before Bono described meeting two year old Sophia earlier in the day - playing the guitar. Sophia got him thinking about the band.

'I was watching her play and I know, for a fact, that I can behave and feel like that.
'You know, if there is any single idea that underpins our band, it's that you can start again.
'Pretend you don't know us! We've been on the road for a while, but this is the day we start again...
'You think of him as a tough guy. But I tell you, he is very thoughtful. On the drums - Larry Mullen Jr.
'On my left, you think of him as a ladies man. Well he is. But he is a perfect gentleman. On bass - Adam Clayton.
'Edge, you think he is a techie zen master guitar genius but I see him as one of Lady Gaga's dancers. A funky dude on the dancefloor, just get out of his way.
'And as for me, despite what you've heard, I'm a man of simple needs. Just get me 70,000 people, 200 articulated lorries and a spaceship, and I feel good about myself...'

And just get the rest of us All I Want is You, Stay, Beautiful Day, Zooropa, City of Blinding Lights.... and we feel good about ourselves too.

'Neon heart dayglo eyes
A city lit by fireflies
They're advertising in the skies
For people like us
And I miss you when you're not around
I'm getting ready to leave the ground...'

Special mention tonight for Alexander, the son of Aung San Suu Kyi, who was with us and to Bill and Melinda Gates, in their home city.

Moment of Surrender is a chance to 'think of our little planet spinning round the sun - this is for all the people who are trying not to fall off...'

So were you at the show ? Was it worth the wait ? When did your feet leave the ground and you realise you were in orbit ? Add your own review and post your photos below.

Needed ride from Seattle to Oakland
Will anyone be driving from Seattle, show to Oakland show? I screwed myself in my planning some how. I may had saw Amtrack as way cheaper than it is now or forgot that I was suppose to fly from Seattle. Either way I am coming from freaking Cincinnati, and am desperate to get to Oakland, and I am on the west coast following them for the month so am strapped on cash.

Looking forward to the Seattle show!
This is my third U2 show. The first in Spain (Joshua Tree) in 1987, the next at the Tacoma Dome (Achtung Baby) in 1992, and this show at Quest field (No Line on The Horizon) in 2011. The show in Spain was the first time the band had ever performed in front of an audience over 100,000. I would love it if they played "Out of Control" as that is the one song that I feel encompasses the bands slightly punk roots and combines it with elements that are so unmistakeably U2. The Spain show was incredible, as they performed in front of a banner backdrop made of cotton, now they have the Claw. Maybe if they could close with Moment of Surrender and "40" the night would be complete.

the future...
so now that the 360 tour is almost completed, after 2 years of wonderful work, will U2 make the ' "mistake" ' of immediately recording a totally different studio album or make the ' "mistake" ' of taking too much time off !??...

Multi-generation is great
Hey amishcow, so cool, bringing your parents! My mom is 77 and past going to rock shows anymore but I did take her to see U2 once or twice back in the Joshua Tree era...I was at the Denver show last week, my 26th in 26 years, and sat behind a family from Kansas City with 2 boys under age 10. They were waiting at the tunnel when Bono & Edge arrived and got to shake hands! It is so much fun to see families and fans of all ages enjoying the greatest band in the world together.

Please hear us!!
We saw the show in Vancouver Canada in 2009 and were so blown away by Ultraviolet and The Unforgettable Fire that we just HAD to get tickets to the Seattle show too! We haven't missed a tour since Joshua Tree and seeing those two songs on the first leg was EPIC! Seattle deserves this gem of a set list. PLEASE share these songs with Seattle :)

My hometown!
I've been seeing U2 four times a tour since ZOO TV. Seattle will be my third show on the 360 Tour. What's more, I will be bringing my twelve year old niece to her first concert ever. She's absolutely psyched to see it. And so am I. Hope 'Return of the Stingray Guitar' is still on the set. See you in June! Woo-hoo!
